More than 75% of Australian commuters travel by car to their place of work or study and this has serious consequences for our health and for the environment.
If you average 50km
a day by car, you contribute up to 3.8 tonnes of greenhouse gases and particulates every year.
Fact
More than one third of our population is exposed to substantial health risk from physical inactivity – 40% of urban NSW residents are not physically active at levels recommended for good health and 41% are considered overweight or obese.
Transport is Australia's third-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and has the fastest growing emissions of any sector. Vehicles are the major source of the most common air pollutants in NSW urban areas – photochemical smog and particle pollution.
Greater vehicle numbers have inhibited pedestrian movement and discouraged bicycle use. Vehicles have a significant impact on the urban environment through noise, congestion, fumes and visual intrusion – they are also consuming unsustainable quantities of non-renewable fuel.
How car dependent is your workplace? Are you contributing to the ever enlarging vehicle numbers and greenhouse gas effect?
Are you aware of the health and business benefits of 'active transport'? You could make a healthy change by re-thinking how you and your colleagues get around – at work, and getting to and from work.
