Laws apply to the use, storage, transport and disposal of certain hazardous materials.

ACTU surveys of workers have found that up to 88% use chemicals at work. If you use chemicals at work, your employer is required by law to supply you and other workers with information and training in their 'safe' use.
Generally, small to medium-sized businesses do not require an Environment Protection Licence from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). However, find out – refer to the Guide to Licensing.

Poisoning can occur through swallowing, inhalation, or skin or eye contact. Seek medical attention if poisoning occurs. For further information contact the Poisons Information Centre on 131 126 (24 hours).
If your organisation uses solvent-based degreasing machines, consider alternatives such as aqueous washer units or ultrasonic cleaners, which use cleaning solutions that can be reused.
Keep an up-to-date inventory of all the chemicals stored on site. Store older chemicals towards the front of the storage area to prevent the newer ones being used first. This may prevent unnecessary waste.
The laws relating to chemical storage vary depending on the amount that you are storing. Check with Workcover NSW to determine if you need a dangerous goods licence.
Storing liquid waste safely helps protect the environment and your business. Store chemicals in a bunded and covered area so that accidental spills cannot reach stormwater drains or the soil.
