Living Sustainably

Transport

Did you know?

Total vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) have increased by over 25% in the last decade, more than double the rate of population growth.

If every vehicle owner in New South Wales drove an average of one kilometre less each day, we'd save up to 130 million litres of fuel every year. Instead, we're driving more often.

As well as generating greenhouse gases and consuming an unsustainable quantity of fuel, motor vehicles are the most significant source of air toxics.

A number of these contaminants have been linked to causing cancer, birth defects, brain and nerve damage, and long term injury to the lungs and breathing passages.

What can I do?

By using cars less we can improve our health, reduce air pollution and improve quality of life for the whole community.

Do you get in your car every time you need to go somewhere? Can you walk or cycle more often?

Driving less doesn't mean you stay at home more or spend more time in transit.

Easy ways to make a difference:

  1. Leave the car at home – use public transport, cycle or walk – particularly for short trips
  2. Plan your trips to avoid peak hours if possible
  3. Share trips with friends by car pooling
  4. Find out about special public transport services for major public events
  5. Join in the next Walk Safely to School Day or Walk to Work Day
  6. Learn about fuel-smart driving
  7. Ask your local council to organise special transport for community events
